4 Gal. Edgefield Pottery Jar (4 of 4)
Description/Dimensions: One gallon Edgefield jug attributed to B. F. Landrum. 11 3/4" tall. Larger than a gallon milk jug.
Damage/Repairs: Perfect. No chips, cracks, hairlines, etc.
Description/Dimensions: Museum quality. 14 1/2" tall x 12 1/2" in diameter. Base is 8" across and the rim is 6 3/4". Beautiful runny, golden olive brown alkaline glaze, a graceful urn shape, early style tie rim, and lug handles. Marks are slip trailed on shoulder just below the rim on both sides. The white slip-trailed marks appear virtually the same on either side and are as decorative as they are informative. The date, 1855, lies between two horizontal lines, and a row of five dots appears above the top line indicating the five gallon capacity. This brown body of the pot is streaked with golden green drips and darker brown areas. Of particular interest is that one side of the jar shows the "orangepeel" pattern of salt effect. This is probably the result of residual salt in a kiln that was once used for salt glazing. As a result, the two sides of the pot appear somewhat different from one another.
Damage/Repairs: Throughly original and unrepaired pot. Small chip on one lug handle.
Provenance: Collected in eastern South Carolina in the summer of 1973 by a young Texan who sold it to the present owner in the 1980s. The winning bidder will receive the names of the two previous owners.
Description/Dimensions: One gallon Edgefield jug. Attributed to Miles Mills. Marked with two slashes on the top. 12" tall. Slash marks have been known to have been made on pieces attributed to "Dave". These marks do no represent the capacity of the jug seeing that it is a one gallon jug and not two. Greenish brown alkaline glaze.
Damage/Repairs: Has had it's handle repaired.
Description/Dimensions: Edgefield bowl thrown at the Miles Mills site. Green alkaline glaze that some yellow due to underfiring.
Damage/Repairs: One small hairline on the side of the rim about 1" long.
Description/Dimensions: Fresh to the market is a fantastic and very hard to find signed 1/2 gallon alkaline glazed stoneware jug. Stamped front and upper center "W. F. HAHN/TRENTON/SC". Great drips! Identical example is shown on page 102 of Cinda K. Baldwin's book "Great & Noble Jar". 5 1/2" in diameter. 9 1/4" tall. Dates to late 19th century.
Damage/Repairs: Overall condition is excellent with a couple of minor chips on the stackable rims. No cracks!
Description/Dimensions: Museum quality alkaline, glaze, ovoid, 6 or 7 gallon stoneware jar. 17" tall x 13 1/2" in diameter at its widest point. Base is 8 1/2" across and the rim is 7 1/4". Beautiful, smooth, mottled olive green and golden brown alkaline glaze, a graceful shape, tie rim and lug handles. The decoration is slip trailed on the shoulder and below the handles, and runs completely around the pot. The dark brown slip trailed decoration is in what is called a "loop swag" style typical of pieces made at the Chandler/Trapp site in Edgefield, SC. Georeganna Greer dates this type of slip decoration to the 1850s. At present time, the jar feels slightly "greasy", probably as a result of holding lard. No effort has been made to de-grease it.
Damage/Repairs: Thoroughly original and unrepaired pot. Minimal chipping around base from normal wear. There is a 1" chip on the corner of one handle. The only other thing that could be called a flaw is age crazing in the glaze, primarily on the upper half of the jar. The crazing actually adds depth to the patina of the glaze.
Provenance: Collected in Edgefield area in the summer of 1973 by a young Texan who sold it to the present owner in the 1980s. The winning bidder will receive the names of the two previous owners.
Description/Dimensions: Wonderful jar made and signed by Joseph G. Baynham, whom was born in Aiken Co. South Carolina in 1841. Two gallon with a flat top. 13" tall. The base has a diameter of 7 3/4"/ {oece os somged os JGB. For information on the signature or the potter, refer to Great & Noble Jar, Author: Baldwin, p. 218.
Damages/Repairs: Three small chips on the lip.
Description/Dimensions: One gallon BF Landrum Jug. 11 1/2" tall. Greenish brown alkaline glaze. There is a place on the body where the glaze is light and I believe it is the thumb print of the potter.
Damages/Repairs: Perfect condition.
Description/Dimensions: Edgefield storage jar from the John Landrum site. 12" high, 30" in circumference at its widest point. Dark green alkaline glaze and has two slash marks next to one of the handles. Could signify capacity of the jar or be makers marks.
Damage/Repairs: Couple flea bites on the handles. Glaze wear on top of rim from years of use.
Description/Dimensions: Three gallon Edgefield pottery jug with an alkaline glaze and kaolin slip decoration. Displays the number three within a sway & loop circular border. The date 1856 is also displayed in kaolin slip. There are kaolin runs present. 15" high. Olive green alkaline glaze is thinnly applied with exposed areas of clay. No maker's marks on the jug, but my opinion is that it was made at the old Chandler site. The swag and loop type decoration was their stock and trade.
Damage/Repairs: Although free of cracks, major dings, it is missing two-thirds of its handle. One minute chip on the lip of the jug and a few minor knicks on the slip.
Description/Dimensions: Nice four gallon alkaline glazed jar with some nice alkaline runs on it. Also has a throwing ridge around the entire jar at the circular lug handles. The glaze is a beautiful rich brown and the creamy/green runs highlight the glaze. The jar has a very deep interior lip almost 1 3/4" below the top rim. Definitely made to hold some sort of cover. 16" high, 8" across the mouth, 36" approximately in circumference around the shoulder just below the handles. The jar, when I found it, had remnants of three different colors of paint it had received over the years; but most of the paint had flacked off and I had no problem removing the rest. I mention this only because some of the red staining of the paint is still evident on the top rim and jar bottom. This can be easily removed but I will leave that choice to the buyer.
Damage/Repairs: The jar is in great shape except for a 1 1/2" long section on the rim. No other cracks or damage.
